You’re listening to Way FM 105.3—your positive alternative.
Now, most of us know that brushing and flossing are good for your teeth—but did you know your mouth can actually give clues about your overall health?
Here to explain the mouth-body connection is Dr Bing from Innova Dental. Welcome back!
Dr Bing
Hi Glenn—great to be here!
Glenn Hartas
So this is a big one. You’ve told me before that your mouth isn’t just about teeth. What do you mean by that?
Dr Bing
That’s right—your mouth is actually a window into your overall health. There’s a strong link between oral health and conditions like heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and even pregnancy complications.
When there’s inflammation or infection in your gums, the same bacteria can enter the bloodstream and affect the rest of your body.
Glenn Hartas
Wow. So things like bleeding gums—that could be more serious than people think?
Dr Bing
Exactly. Bleeding or swollen gums might seem minor, but they can be a sign of gum disease, which has been linked to higher risk of heart issues and poor blood sugar control in diabetics. It’s not about scaring people—it’s about picking these things early and keeping you healthy long term.
Glenn Hartas
And what about during pregnancy? I’ve heard there’s a link there too?
Dr Bing
Yes—pregnancy changes hormone levels, which is why pregnant women might notice gums their being more inflamed and puffy. This increases the risk of gum disease. And research shows that poor oral health during pregnancy has been linked to early labour and low birth weight. That’s why we encourage mums-to-be to come in for an examination and clean to keep on top of gum issues during pregnancy.

So it’s safe to say your dentist is part of your healthcare team?
Dr Bing
Absolutely. At Innova Dental, our dentists look beyond the teeth—we’re here to support your whole wellbeing. Whether it’s managing gum health, spotting early signs of decay, or helping with dry mouth from medications, it all adds up to better health overall.
Glenn Hartas
And I love that you do it in a way that’s approachable and stress-free—no lectures, just care.
Dr Bing
