Alright—metal fillings, white fillings… is one better than the other?

Dr Bing
They both do the job, but there are some key differences. Metal fillings, also known as amalgam, have been used for decades. They’re strong and durable—but they’re silver in colour, which makes them more noticeable, especially in your back teeth.

And white fillings?

Dr Bing
White fillings are made of composite resin, or ceramic, and we match them to your natural tooth colour—so they blend in beautifully. These days, they’re also very strong, especially when bonded properly, and they can be used for both front and back teeth.

So are metal fillings unsafe?

Dr Bing
Not necessarily. Amalgam is still considered safe, but many people choose to replace them for cosmetic reasons or if the filling is starting to break down, leak, or cause cracks in the tooth. That’s something we assess case by case.

So if someone has a mouth full of silver—is it worth switching them out?

Dr Bing
It depends. We don’t recommend replacing them just because. But if a filling is old, damaged, or causing issues, we’ll discuss your options. And many people who do choose to upgrade love the confidence boost from a more natural look.

And I imagine today’s materials are a lot more advanced?
